About SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance)

My image
Social Security Disability Insurance is a federal insurance program that replaces part of a worker’s income when a medically determinable condition prevents substantial gainful activity for at least 12 months or is expected to result in death. SSDI is funded by payroll (FICA) taxes—if you paid into Social Security and meet medical and technical rules, you may qualify. Benefit amounts are tied to your prior covered earnings.
How SSDI Works
The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates whether your condition prevents substantial gainful activity (SGA) and is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. SSDI is not needs-based; your eligibility is linked to your work record and the Social Security taxes you’ve paid.
Your monthly benefit is calculated from your earnings history using formulas that produce a Primary Insurance Amount (PIA). Payments generally receive annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLA).
Timing & Back Pay
SSDI has a five-month waiting period after your disability onset date. If you’re approved, SSA may pay past-due benefits (back pay) for eligible months and, in some cases, up to 12 months of retroactive benefits if your disability began before you applied.
Health Coverage
Most SSDI beneficiaries become eligible for Medicare after 24 months of entitlement. The timing can differ in limited circumstances set by federal law.
Work Incentives
SSA provides work incentives such as a Trial Work Period and an Extended Period of Eligibility. These rules allow limited test-work without immediately ending benefits, subject to SGA limits and reporting requirements.
Reviews & Other Programs
SSDI cases are periodically reviewed through Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs). SSDI is distinct from Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is a needs-based program with different financial rules.
Key Facts at a Glance
Funded by payroll (FICA) taxes; not a needs-based program
Medical standard: unable to perform SGA for ≥ 12 months
Amount based on prior covered earnings (AIME/PIA formulas)
Five-month waiting period; possible back pay & up to 12 months retroactivity
Medicare eligibility usually begins after 24 months of entitlement
Work incentives may allow limited work attempts without immediate loss of benefits
Periodic Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs) apply
This summary is general information and doesn’t cover every exception. Always refer to current SSA guidance for the latest rules.
